WordPress have recently cut their Twitter social sharing option due to the huge increase in the API subscription plan. No longer will you be able to share articles directly to the social platform.
WordPress has become the latest of huge platforms to turn its back on Twitter integrations. As Elon Musk decided to increase costs again, he introduced API subscription plans. These come at a huge cost and many large companies are finding themselves being forced to pay it to keep integrations from their websites to Twitter.
However, multiple well known platforms have refused to pay it. Instead, they have decided to remove themselves from Twitter integration. This will affect users of these platforms, but it wasn’t a choice these companies made lightly. It’s simply a case of Elon Musk becoming too greedy once again.
Once Musk took over the company, big changes came into place. Many of which haven’t gone down well with Twitter users. Costs upon costs have been added to the once free platform. The latest sees Twitter shut down the free API offer, and implement a paid subscription service instead. The subscription service is a tiered system and will start at a huge $42,000 per month.
Twitter removed from WordPress JetPack
WordPress are the latest to remove themselves from this. Originally, they offered a JetPack service which allowed WordPress users to automatically publish their articles to several social media platforms. This option could be found within the taskbar when publishing an article. However, now, users will no longer be able to select Twitter.
Users of WordPress will still be able to share content directly to the likes of Google and Facebook, but they won’t be able to select Twitter. The company even attempted to strike a deal with Twitter to keep this an option for their users. However, Twitter didn’t seem willing to help, and no deal could be met, so WordPress have had no choice but to remove the option.
“We have attempted to work with Twitter in good faith to negotiate new terms, but we have not been able to reach an agreement. As a result, the Twitter connection on Jetpack Social will cease to work, and your blog posts will no longer be auto-shared to Twitter.” WordPress spoke out about the recent changes and how they had been effected by them.
JetPack will still be able to share content to LinkedIn, Facebook, Tumblr and so on. It’s only the one platform that will be missing. Alongside this, WordPress are working on adding Mastodon which is a decentralised version of Twitter essentially. They’re also looking to add Instagram to their options via JetPack so users can share directly there as well.
WordPress aren’t the only platform to remove Twitter from their integrations. The likes of Microsoft, Xbox, and Intercom have all decided to part with the social platform. Despite these companies being huge and possibly being able to afford the cost, it does seem extremely high when the feature was previously free.
