Becoming an influencer is more than just being likeable online. You need to understand digital landscaping, and know how to create authentic and organic content.
It’s unlikely all those who set out to become an influencer are successful. Many influencers don’t look to reach that label. Instead, they might just create content for the fun of it. A lot of influencers are thrown into the label when their content begins to go viral. You might even become an influencer without meaning to.
Once you start creating content for brands and businesses and are paid to do so, you’re essentially already there. You have the influencer title. Setting out to have this title might see you disappointed. We’d recommend looking to be a successful content creator first. However, to do this, you will need to be equipped with these lessons.
Be authentic
Content is saturated, as are social media platforms. We’re constantly seeing the same video repeated by different creators. It’s on a loop. Once one creator makes a video, and it performs well, everyone else jumps on the same idea. Try and stay away from this where you can. Just be you and create your own content.
Of course, you’re going to want to join in trends, but make sure your own spin is on it. Not someone else’s. People are more likely to trust an influencer who seems genuine. Someone who isn’t afraid to admit when a product isn’t great. Form your own opinions and don’t allow anyone else to sway them. This will help you stand out.
Consistency is key
Remember, quality over quantity always. However, regular content is a must. You can’t be an influencer if you only post once every month. While you might struggle to find content in the early stages, you need to. Leaving your account for a while will damage the account, and you might find you lose followers.
Post frequently, but ensure the content is of good quality. If you’re posting for the sake of it, people will be able to tell. Your content should be well-researched and put together well. If you’re creating content to throw up, you’re not going to reach influencer status. People want to be inspired, not see the same work again and again.
Engage with your audience
Your engagement is fuel. The more people comment and like your posts, the more your work will spread. However, make sure you’re giving back to them. Reply to their comments, give answers where you can. The more you engage, the more trust you will build up. People will believe you’re authentic, and aren’t an influencer that ignores your followers.
Get involved with Q&As. Listen to what other creators have to say. Ensure you’re pitching ideas and getting involved with what others are doing. It could lead to some interesting collaborations further down the line. The more you engage with others, the more likely you are to stand out, which could lead you to the brand deal you’ve been looking for.
Remember to always take advice and criticism. You might not like what you hear, but we can’t always be perfect. As long as they’re speaking to you in a respectful manner, do the same in return. Of course, if things get very nasty, learn not to retaliate and block them instead. It isn’t always about having the final word.
