Spotify increases US subscription costs again

The streaming store Spotify have increased their subscription cost again, this being the second time within a year. All paid plans will see a price hike, and not all are the same increases.

Just one year after Spotify announced they were increasing their subscription costs within the US, they’re doing it again. Spotify subscribers will have received an email outlining the new costs, and those who don’t want to pay it will have no choice other than to leave the platform. Perhaps finding a new streaming store instead. Although arguably they’re all similar pricing.

If you’re a US Spotify user, and you haven’t already had the email, you will do by next month. It seems Premium, Duo and the Family plan are all being increased. Premium will be £11.99 per month, which is $1.00 more than last year. Whereas, Duo is increasing by $2. From $14.99 to $16.99 and Family will be increasing by $3.00, now sitting at $19.99 every month.

The price of Duo has now increased by 30% within one year. This is compared with prices before Spotify had their hike last year. Spotify Family has increased by 25% over a year and the normal Premium has risen by 20%. While Spotify held off for quite some time on increasing their subscription costs, it seems quite the jump in just one year.

Spotify has said, “So that we can continue to invest in and innovate on our product features and bring users the best experience, we occasionally update our prices. Over the next month, subscribers in the US will receive an email explaining what this update means for their subscription.” The increase seems to be down to ensuring they can continue with growth.

Growth for not only the brand but also the individual products within the brand. The more they can invest back into the company, the more they will get out of it. However, it would be nice to see increases in pay for artists across the world, but that’s an argument for another article. Overall, price increases are to be expected, it’s just a shame it’s so soon.
