TikTok introduces a new group chat feature to keep conversations within their app. Now, you can add up to 32 people into one message, and bounce videos back and forth between you all.
TikTok recently added a new feature which allows all users over 16 to create large group chats. Previously, users could send messages and videos to friends within the platform, but if they wanted more than one friend to see a video, they’d have to message them separately.
There wasn’t an option to create group chats previously. However, now, TikTok have made some huge changes. It’s likely they’ve realised so many of their users were heading to other messaging apps in order to share TikTok content with friends.
Let’s face it, sending messages individually to each person is quite a long process. Especially if there’s quite a large group of people you want to share content with. Now, TikTok have enabled a group chat feature which will allow up to 32 people in one conversation.
Why 32 and not 30–we’re not sure! But, the good news is, for all those over 16, you will now be able to head to your inbox and start adding friends to a group chat. Head to your Inbox > click Chat > choose your friends and then press Start group chat.
You are only able to join a group chat you have been added to, and the account adding you must be following you before they can add you to a chat. If you have your messaging option turned off, you won’t receive group chat requests.
Anyone under 18 will need to be following and be followed by someone within a group chat to be able to join it. This is slightly stricter, but it’s there to protect younger users against online bullying and damaging situations.
Any teen creating a group chat will become the admin and will need to review and approve anyone joining the conversation. So, if your friend adds someone to your chat, you can approve or deny the request. However, anyone under 16 cannot use this at all.
DMs were disabled for under 16s back in 2020. This is for the safety of younger users and should be encouraged across other platforms. It’s great to see TikTok are heading in the right direction with group chats. Making the platform better for everyone.
