With the new iOS updates comes changes to Apple Music. Users can expect to see SharePlay without the need for a subscription as well as new browsing options and enhanced listening features.
Apple Music are going through their usual annual update period. However, this Autumn, we’re due to see two sets of updates very close together. Some of the changes we can expect to see will arrive in iOS 18.0 and the rest will come shortly after during the iOS 18.1 updates.
It’s been said that iOS 18.1 will arrive in October, but we will see iOS 18.0 appear this month. There are changes that will help with organisation, especially when it comes to apps. Also, we’re going to experience SharePlay for free, as well as iPad only features.
Free Apple SharePlay
Previously, SharePlay was only available to those who paid for an Apple Music subscription. This cut off a lot of connections which wasn’t the aim of the feature. SharePlay was designed to allow friends and family to share the music experience.
You could combine music tastes by adding songs to a playlist or line-up and letting the platform flick through your streaming choices. However, this feature was gatekept behind a paywall. It meant to share the control of music, you would need an Apple Music subscription.
With new iOS 18.0 changes, anyone can join in the fun. If you’re using a HomePod, Apple TV or a Bluetooth speaker, anyone can view the playlist queue, edit it and add songs to it. If friends want to collab, they can use a QR code provided and start sharing.
Browse is out, and New is in with iOS 18
With the changes to Apple Music comes a little makeover. The navigation tabs are being changed. Previously, there was a Browse tab which now has been changed to be called New. You will still be able to access the same content, however.
The section New Releases for You will still be found under the Home area instead of the New tab. This doesn’t quite make sense to many people, but perhaps this will change again in the near future once Apple have made all their changes.
Music Haptics – enhanced listening
For those who are able to update to iOS 18, you’ll soon be able to access Music Haptics. It will be off by default so you will need to switch this on. If you head to your Settings and then find Accessibility, you will be able to find this option.
Your whole music experience could change. You’ll be able to experience taps, textures and vibrations that previously you couldn’t. Music Haptics can join up with Apple Music, Music Classical and Shazam. It can even work with certain third-party apps.
iPad users will see a new tab bar within Apple Music
iPadOS 18.1 will be on its way very soon. iPad users can expect to see a floating tab that can be completely personalised. Users can add playlists, or regularly used sections such as; Recently Added, Downloaded, Artists, Albums, Made for You and more.
Any of these options can be added to the tab which will appear on the iPad Apple Music homepage. It will allow music listeners to access the sections they want within just a few clicks. Keeping their homepage looking neat, while also allowing customisation.
