How to get your music played on the radio

Every day, millions of radio listeners find new favourite songs thanks to the radio. That’s why as a music artist, it’s important you try and get your music featured on air.

Getting your music played on the radio can be a great way to reach new listeners and build your fanbase. While radio stations are selective, there are a few strategies you can use to increase your chances of getting airtime. Here’s a simple guide on how to do it.

1. Find the right radio stations

Start by researching local or independent stations that play your genre of music. It’s often easier to get airplay on smaller stations before targeting larger, national ones. Community, college, and online radio stations are good places to start.

2. Create a professional press kit

A press kit is like a resume for your music. It should include:

  • A bio about you as an artist or band
  • A high-quality photo
  • Links to your best songs (or a physical copy if required)
  • Contact information

Make sure your music is well-produced and ready for radio play.

3. Submit your music

Once you’ve identified the right stations, look for their submission guidelines. Most radio stations have a specific way they want you to send your music. Follow their instructions carefully, whether it’s submitting through a website, email, or mailing a CD.

4. Build relationships with DJs

Networking is key! Reach out to DJs or show hosts via email or social media. Don’t spam them—send a polite introduction, tell them why your music fits their show, and link to your tracks. If they like your music, they may give you a spin.

5. Be persistent but patient

Radio stations receive lots of submissions, so you may not get an answer right away. Follow up respectfully after a few weeks, but keep working on getting your music heard through other channels as well.
