Apple’s new iOS 18.2 update – Music Recognition can tell where you heard a song first

Apple Music made updates to their Shazam feature within their new iOS 18.2 launch. The tool, which can recognise music and tell you artist names and song titles, will now be able to tell you where you first heard the track.

When Shazam was first introduced, it was revolutionary. A feature that was able to tell you a song name, and artist name from just hearing a few second clip. It was way ahead of its time. Since Apple acquired the feature, they have worked hard to make it grow.

Apple have recently been working on some updates for their iOS 18.2 launch. You no longer need the Shazam app to be able to identify music. Instead, Music Recognition will do it for you. Essentially, this is a Shazam rebrand.

The newest update being, the feature can now tell you where you first heard the song. Well, it can tell you where you first asked to identify a track. Apple will track your history so you can be reminded where you first found the music.

You can then revisit your history later and find the artist or album via both Apple Music and Spotify. Interesting, they’ve included Spotify and not made the feature specific to Apple Music users. However, a smart move if they want to get more people interested in iOS devices.

Apple tends to prioritise Apple Music users which is understandable however, it then puts people off their devices. Allowing people to still access the music identifier and save the tracks within Spotify is a bonus for the music company.
