PUSH 101: Why you need a mobile friendly website

It’s 2022, everyone uses their phones for everything. In fact, more and more people don’t have access to a computer or laptop. They solely rely on their mobile phones. Having a website that is optimised for mobile users is key. If not, you can wave goodbye to a large portion of your potential audience.

We live in an era where everyone has a phone. People are glued to their mobile devices. In fact, there’s people out there that would rather go without food than paying their phone bill. It’s become somewhat of an unhealthy obsession. However, mobile phones do connect us. We can reach out to friends and family, no matter where they are in the world. Mobiles becoming so accessible has changed the way we communicate. It can be argued this isn’t a good thing, but so many new avenues have come from the smartphone being created. In fact, 55% of our PUSH blog readers access us via their mobile phone.

What is a mobile friendly website?

A website that is optimised for mobile, also known as mobile friendly, is simply a website that has been designed to be used on a mobile device. Of course, it doesn’t mean mobile only. However, typically websites have different views depending on what equipment you view them on. Your phone screen is smaller than your desktop view. This can change everything about a website. That is, if it’s not been optimised for mobile.

Websites should load quickly on smartphones and be responsive. Everyone heads to their phone for a quick and easy solution. People no longer have time to load up their computer and search for their required sites. Instead, they want a quick method of heading to their phone and finding the information they need. If your website loads quickly, even on a slow internet connection it will be accessible.

The view is often altered to suit mobile screens. Have you ever been onto a website and had to turn your phone rotation lock off, then turn your mobile sidewards to see the page? It’s really quite irritating. Especially when there’s a certain button you need to click to continue, but you can’t because it won’t load with your mobile in portrait mode. These are websites that haven’t been optimised for mobile use. The pages should be essentially shrunk to fit the mobile view.

Why are mobile friendly websites important?

A large amount of people choose mobile over desktop. 69% of online traffic comes from smartphones. So, if your website doesn’t display or respond well on mobile devices, you’re likely to lose a lot of potential users. Your website speed really matters when it comes to ranking as a well performing site. If you want to appear higher within search engines, you need to consider these things. You’ll boost your own status by being optimised for mobile devices.

If people can’t load your website quickly, they’ll be likely to look elsewhere. This is how your competition grows, and you don’t. You need to create a good user experience if you want to reach larger audiences. People aren’t going to come back if your site majorly lags. Also, they won’t be back if they can’t read certain information due to the way your website is set up on their screen. Everything should look as smooth as it does on your desktop version. If your site is one that includes purchases, you especially need to make sure it is set up for mobiles. Lagging on a site that is taking payments isn’t a good look, and, in fact, you will put a lot of potential customers off. They simply won’t trust it.
