People wait all year long for YouTube Rewind. If you don’t know what it is, it’s essentially a replay of various videos or songs that have been popular throughout the year. All the best and most viral content from YouTube gets combined into one big video. However, it’s the end of an era. YouTube have replaced the feature with something new.
YouTube Rewind
Above is the last ever YouTube Rewind video that was put up on the platform in 2019. They couldn’t post one for 2020 for numerous reasons. It’s possible with everything happening throughout the pandemic, it just didn’t feel right. However, this made it the last one they’d ever create. People probably thought they’d take 2020 off and come back fighting for 2021.
Countless celebrities have been featured in previous years videos. Songs were created for the clips. It really was a huge fanfare. Unfortunately that part of YouTube has gone. It’s a shame because people would wait all year for its release. Including content creators doing everything within their power to get their content viral in time to be included within YouTube Rewind. It’s been around since 2011, so it’s a shame we couldn’t quite make it to a decade.
YouTube did say at the time that they don’t plan to pull the plug with their yearly videos completely. However, instead they’d come from a new angle. Although YouTube themselves didn’t create one for 2020, there are many YouTubers that did make their own parody. Mr Beast a well known name on the platform created a version of Rewind 2020. The idea behind his video was that people were thankful 2020 had come to an end. After a difficult year people needed the likes of Rewind to see what good had come out of the year. They also wanted something to poke fun at.
Escape2021
That’s right, we have something in its place! YouTube took some time to address Rewind before they cancelled it. It plays a large part in the content made by creators throughout the year. Especially around the holiday period. But, they did say they wouldn’t be gone forever. Everything good must come to an end, but it gives space to adapt. The team over at YouTube had been working hard on a new idea. We’ll still get a yearly round-up, but in a slightly different way. So, what can we expect?
We’re being brought Escape2021 which is the same concept but in a livestream format. No longer will YouTube be posting one video randomly. Instead, it will be a 3 part livestream. The first being made available on the 16th December. Others will shortly follow. It will be a 24-hour interactive livestream. That’s pretty incredible. A lot more effort has gone into this than Rewind, surely. It’s bound to be massive. Will it be received as well as Rewind?
You can even see a countdown to the next reveal. Meanwhile, you still have access to the previous content shown. That’s a lot to watch. You can’t complain that YouTube haven’t come back fighting. They’ve really shown who’s boss by providing hours of entertainment this time around. Will you be watching this new version, or are you a Rewind fan who wants it back?
