It isn’t always enough to ignore the type of content you don’t want to see. For many, it can be incredibly triggering to see certain topics. Read on to find how to remove this risk, and only see what you want to see.
Each person’s TikTok account is extremely personal. You spend months, or years even swiping through and building a digital footprint. Along the way, TikTok learns what you like and what you dislike, but, sometimes it can get this wrong which can be harmful. When the platform works in your favour, it’s great, but if it goes off-piste, it’s not.
You can reset your FYP (For You Page) however, this doesn’t spot negative things from appearing. It might be you’re sensitive to certain topics, or, they could even be triggers for you. If that’s the case, you’re going to want to ban them straight away, because once a trigger, always a trigger. You can tell someone to ignore those videos, but that’s not how it works.
Creating content preferences
Within the TikTok app, you can add your own content preferences. If you’re scrolling down your FYP and you see something you don’t like, there are options. When it’s a simple matter of taste, you can press and hold on the screen, you’ll see a pop-up of options. Choose Not Interested, and you won’t see that content again.
The more you do this, the more TikTok understands you’re not interested in this topic type. It could be completely harmless, you just have a different video interest to what is displayed. Likewise, you can press and hold and Favourite the video if you think it’s something you’d like to see more of. Over time TikTok will amend its video suggestions based upon your choices.
Reporting videos
When a video appears that is deeply offensive, or potentially harmful, you can report it. This will let TikTok know who can then review the clip themselves. However, be aware, you cannot report videos simply because you don’t like them. The content must go against the Community Guidelines if you are reporting it.
TikTok’s moderation team will not only review the video, but also, the content creator. Their account could be suspended, or completely banned if the content goes against the rules. Any videos which could be found as harmful should be reported. But, if it is your own views that make you dislike the content, follow a different method of avoiding it instead.
Restricted mode
To limit any content which might be harmful to yourself, but not others, you can enable Restricted Mode. This will make your account more selective of the content it displays to you. The type of content blocked will be broader, however. So, it will block anything that could be sensitive, rather than just anything falling into one specific category.
Restricted Mode, is largely for teens on the app. Parents are able to enable it, and it will prevent any content which might not be appropriate from being seen. You can decide to turn this off at any stage if you feel necessary. The option comes underneath the Digital Wellbeing aspect of TikTok’s platform.
To set this up, complete the following:
- Select “Digital Wellbeing” under the app settings
- Tap “Turn On”
- Set a passcode
- Toggle “Restricted Mode”
